The Mastodon

Hand grinder

Grind it yourself, and the day starts slower.

Not out yet

These are production samples, photographed on a phone at the factory. Proper photographs, the full setup guide and a first-time video all land on this page when the piece ships. Scan the code again then and it will have changed.

The piece

A hand crank, a conical burr, and a numbered dial that stays where you set it. Burrs crush the bean evenly instead of chopping it, and turning it yourself keeps the heat out of the grind — which is the whole argument for doing it the slow way. The glass jar below lets you watch it fill, and tells you when you have enough without a scale.

Mechanism
Conical burr, stepped adjustment
Grind range
Espresso through French press
Catch jar
Glass, visible fill
Power
Hand crank. No socket, no battery
Capacity
One to two cups per fill
Noise
Quiet enough for a sleeping house

Specifications are provisional until the production run is confirmed

How it works

Set the dial

Finer for moka and espresso, coarser for pour over and press. Set it once for your brew and leave it there.

Fill and crank

Beans in the top, lid on, crank steadily. Do not rush it; an even turn gives an even grind.

Empty the jar

Unscrew the glass, tip it into your basket. Brush the burr clean every few grinds.

Treated well

Do

  • Brush the burr dry after use
  • Rinse the glass jar in warm water
  • Pack it for travel; it needs nothing at all
  • Store it dry with the lid off

Don't

  • No dishwasher for the burr assembly
  • Never soak the burr mechanism
  • Do not grind oily or flavoured beans
  • Nothing but coffee. No spices

Kinship — The mastodon chewed through the Ice Age on ridged molars built for grinding. We took the name for the one object in the range that does exactly that.
